Course Outline

  • Orientation to desktop publishing: from computer to newsstand
  • Basic typography and graphic design principles
  • Preparing images for printing
  • Publication design
  • Basic HTML and web design
  • Image processing for the WWW
  • Online publication formats
  • Defining a production workflow for online publication

The trimester will be divided into two parts, the first devoted to print production and the second to web production.

Requirements

  • Midterm project: Designing a magazine or newsletter. Involves a grid system defined and applied to five sample pages.
  • Final project - individual: The prototype for a news-oriented community web site, consisting of a design brief (submitted as hardcopy, with printouts of sample pages appended) and the prototype itself, accessible on the WWW.
  • Final project - class: A live Webcast. Coverage of an event by groups from various remote locations over a one-week period.
  • Exercises and homework, usually applications of the current lesson, and building towards the major projects (see above). The print exercises are to be compiled in a folder and submitted on midterm exam day. The WWW exercises are to be compiled on a Web site, the URL of which will be e-mailed to the professor before finals week.
  • Quizzes, both short and long, both announced and unannounced, and a Midterm Exam.

  • Deadlines are strictly enforced.
  • Students are expected to participate actively in all class discussions, do the assigned work and observe all rules and regulations, especially those pertaining to the use of the Desktop Laboratory.
  • Failure to submit the midterm or the final project will automatically result in a Final grade of 0.0.
